Internship Update and Insights

This spring, we were pleased to kick off our new college internship program at The Moran Company. We welcomed Marcus Jones, a Junior at William Jewell College, to our team. During his three-month internship, Marcus led a variety of project-based research efforts and worked with our administrative team and our senior search consultants to learn more about leadership in the nonprofit sector.

The Moran Company’s internship program is one component of our ongoing effort to grow and support emerging leaders who have traditionally been underrepresented in the nonprofit sector. We believe that the sector must become more diverse and inclusive in order to thrive, and by offering opportunities for future generations of nonprofit leaders to grow professionally, we are supporting this belief. I want to thank Marcus for his hard work and willingness to dive into new projects with a sense of curiosity, enthusiasm and flexibility. Below are a few words from Marcus about his experience this spring:

I have had a tremendous time understanding the nonprofit sector with the help of The Moran Company. What the company is doing is like nothing I have ever seen. For a company that was launched 25 years ago and grown while working all remotely since then is amazing. I have had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs from multiple consultants, my own research and, of course, Bill Moran himself. It was such an honor to pick the brains of these wonderful people and expand my understanding of the nonprofit sector, on top of me being the first intern with the company.

One perspective that really took me by storm was the lack of diversity in the nonprofit sector in majority white environments. In my past experiences in the nonprofit sector, I didn’t see much of a struggle in the African American communities because it was a necessity to strive for unity in communities such as my own town (Wyandotte County, Kansas). I came to the realization that it not only takes African Americans to make others aware of the issue in America but our white brothers and sisters to intentionally see the issue and attempt to work on the issue collectively with the black community. That right there is what brings unity in America! And I truly believe that it starts with our organizations that are mission-driven that can tackle the issue.

I thank The Moran Company for allowing me to join the team and to learn as much as I can. Throughout the projects that I was tasked with, to the consultant interviews, I have enjoyed every opportunity to learn, grow and develop my mental insight of the inner workings of the nonprofit sector. Each project that I was handed showed me a better understanding of the sector, a better grasp of who I am, and lastly what areas I would like to see the nonprofit sector to grow in. If we all look at ourselves in the mirror, there is always an area of growth – and if we all look at a broad spectrum, whoever we are working for and with, there are always areas to grow in, as well.
